A lot of golfers are looking for the "secret" to playing great golf. At the very least, most golfers are looking for an easy way to improve.
Sorry to say, but there is no secret. There are only fundamentals and basics. The seemingly boring and basic fundamentals of golf are what separates the high and low handicapper. If you improve your fundamentals, you will be virtually assured improvement.
Here is a guide to follow and what basics to practice frequently and diligently:
1)CHECK YOUR GRIP AND GRIP PRESSURE
Your hands are the only connection to the club and the #1 controller of the clubface. Excess grip pressure is a killer.
2) CHECK YOUR POSTURE AND BALL POSITION
Use mirrors to check your set-up position. Remember: most shots are missed before you take the club away.
3)CHECK YOUR ALIGNMENT
lay down clubs when you practice.
4)USE A PRE-SHOT ROUTINE
All great players do things consistently. Have a random way to set-up and you will hit plenty of random shots.
5)USE A ONE-PIECE TAKEAWAY
To begin the backswing, everything should begin smoothly as a unit with no independent movements. The goal is simplicity and repeatability.
6)HIT THE BALL ON THE SWEET SPOT
Practice 7 irons of a low tee at 70% effort and focus on center contact on the clubface. Check the contact with clubface tape.
7) A BALANCED FINISH
See if you can hold your finish until the ball hits the ground. As George Knudson once said, "A balanced finish insures the desired result".
If there is a secret to golf, it is BE BRLLIANT AT THE BASICS.
