Why is this so important?  Two reasons,  first, returning the shaft is a good indicator that you've squared the clubface on the downswing.  Second, it ensures the clubhead makes the proper angle of approach into the ball.  Give yourself the best chance to return the shaft by creating good posture at address:  arms hanging straight down from shoulders, knees only slightly flexed.  Then, swing the club straight back away from the ball and feel it return straight back into the ball the same way the club started away.  Practice chip shots of 30-50 yards at first, their work your way up to half swings, and then eventually full shots.
